Canon announces two new 70-200 Lenses

Canon has announced the next generation of their EF 70-200mm f/2.8 and f/4 lenses! The lenses are now available on pre-order. Let's take a look at what Canon has told us about these two lenses.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM

It looks like the biggest selling point from Canon on this lens is the new Air Sphere Coating (ASC) technology, which is supposed to suppress reflections, reduce flare and ghosting. Other new features include:

  • Optical Image Stabilizer (up to 3.5 stops of shutter speed)

  • Flourine coatings on the front and rear elements that help reduce smears and fingerprints

  • 23 elements in 19 groups

  • Circular 8-blade aperture

  • Minimum focusing distance of 1.2 meters (3.9 feet)

Retail price: $2099 (A much more reasonable number than the Nikon flagship 70-200!)

Shipping begins: August 2018

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II

The biggest news with this lens appears to be the whopping 5-stops of image stabilization. The lens features three Image Stabilization modes, designed for different shooting situations (still subjects, panning or fast-moving objects, etc.) The IS function is also supposed to function much more quietly, which would be great for someone shooting in a quiet situation (although if you are a wedding or concert shooter, you will probably REALLY want to look at the 2.8 Mark III for the extra stop of light gathering.)

Some additional details:

  • One flourite and two UD lenses

  • Circluar 9-blade aperture

  • 20 elements in 15 groups

  • Fluorine coating on the front & rear elements to help reduce smears and fingerprints

  • Super Spectra Coating technology to help minimize ghosting and flaring

  • Minimum focusing distance of 1m (3.3 ft) - this is down from 1.2 meters in the version 1

Retail Price: $1299

Shipping begins: June 2018!!
